J.R. Alva moved to the Washington area from his native Peru in July of 1985 as his father, Javier Alva-Ambrosini, was sent on a diplomatic mission to the International Defense College at Fort McNair. J.R. attended Montgomery College where he obtained an A.A. in International Business in 1991. He also attended the University of Lima, the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) where he pursued a degree in business administration.
He has vast experience in the mortgage business with over 20 years in the field. He owned and ran HomePoint Real Estate in the early 2000’s, owned and manage a PRMI (Primary Residential Mortgage, Inc) franchise from 2005 to 2007. On his free time, he enjoys windsurfing, surfing, sailing, soccer, tennis, biking, spending time with his family as well as playing board games with his 9-year-old daughter Francesca.
